Quickwords Vol. 18 – Town Square

Welcome to Quickwords, my very own poetry series! I saw some gorgeous fog-cloaked mountains on the way to a dental appointment today, but I was only able to snap the blurry picture below before we drove away. Here are some poems inspired by the small town area I’m sure Vicente Tello could’ve done a better job photographing.

A blurry photograph mostly of a grey sky, but with a tan, tawny-roofed building and empty street in the bottom of the frame.

| Meet you there |

I’ll meet you in the town square
Promise me you’ll be there
The old market’s setting up
All the shops will be open
We’ll feel the breeze lift the tarps and push us apart
But I need you to be there

I’ll meet you when the day’s fair
Promise me you’ll be there
When the sun’s coming up
We’ll only be cold on the inside
We can smile and hope to dig deep enough to warm from the core
But I need you to be there

I’ll meet you where there’s fresh air
Promise me you’ll be there
Poison in our lungs
It doesn’t have to stay
We can run and let fatigue be all that takes our breath
But I need you to be there

I’ll meet you someplace somewhere
Promise me you’ll be there
So we can sit alone
And wait for the sun at high noon
Where you leave for just a second and I never turn back
But I need you to be there
I know you’ve always been there
So meet me in the town square

| Mayor Ashen |

Mayor Ashen sits in the town square too much
There lays a suit of dust on his office chair
He buys a beef sandwich and sits to eat lunch
As the street-corner boys forget the meaning of brunch
They see only one jacket warmer than air

Someone tosses the paper printed at dawn
A jogger picks it up in hope for good word
Mayor Ashen takes it and scans the on and on
He’s forgotten of articles a week has made gone
And reads between the lines of what needs be heard

Frayed shoes and clothes make of forest to a field
Voices speak up to him in and out of turn
Question the order and chaos of what yields
Burns, cuts, breaks, and crimes independently healed
Mayor Ashen’s skin clear with no blemish earned
